FIVE DAYS (OPEN DOORS)
An re-enactment of Walter Hopp’s ’36 Hours’ for the opening of the new galleries at the Centro Cultural de España en Guatemala.
Centro Cultural de España en Guatemala
June 7th – August 10th, 2013
All contemporary artists living in Guatemala, or Guatemala artists living abroad.
For the opening of the new galleries at the Centro Cultural de España in Guatemala, all contemporary artists living in Guatemala and Guatemala artists living abroad were invited to submit one work, bring it to the space and hang it in conjunction with the team. The works were hung on a first come first serve basis and the only restriction was that new works did not affect previously installed one. There were no limitations of any kind as to the type of work that could be submitted except respect to other participating artists and sensibility as the size and relationship with the space. All unforeseen situations were dealt with according to common sense and a collaborative spirit.
187 artists submitted works, which generated a cross-section of what is considered contemporary art in Guatemala according to its authors. More than an exhibition, Five Days became a collaborative collage and the result of people coming together and making an exhibition that was more about the collective than the individual works. It also created a snapshot of what is being produced in Guatemala at this point in time.
